PRESIDENT JOHN Dramani Mahama, currently in Singapore for a three-day state visit, has highlighted key lessons from Singapore’s world-class education and innovation systems that could help accelerate Ghana’s transformation in higher education, research, and industry collaboration.
After delivering the opening keynote address at the Africa Singapore Business Forum on Tuesday, Mr. Mahama visited the Singapore Institute of Technology (SIT) to study its applied-learning approach and strong university, industry partnerships.

“SIT’s integration of work and study, focus on applied research, and close collaboration with industry are preparing students to be both work-ready and future-ready,” he noted.
He also toured SIT’s new campus at Punggol Digital District, a model of how academia, industry, and community can be seamlessly connected to prepare youth for the future of work.

Mr. Mahama also toured *Biopolis*, Singapore’s premier biomedical research hub, which unites public and private players across the entire life sciences R&D value chain — from basic research to clinical development and medical technology.
Reflecting on the visit, he emphasized the need for Ghana to deepen university, industry collaboration, promote applied learning, and align research with national development priorities.
He acknowledged the foundation laid by former Education Minister Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang and stressed the importance of continuing those efforts.

“We must focus on programmes that create jobs, improve lives, and drive innovation through coordinated public–private partnerships,” he said.
President Mahama expressed appreciation to his hosts at SIT and Biopolis and affirmed Ghana’s interest in developing partnerships that will strengthen higher education, health research, and economic growth.
