IN A HEARTFELT message commemorating African Union Day, Dr. Mary Awusi, Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Free Zones Authority (GFZA), has urged Africans to embrace unity, economic integration, and shared prosperity as the continent marks 62 years since the founding of the Organisation of African Unity (OAU), now the African Union (AU).
Dr. Awusi stressed on the importance of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) in driving industrialization, job creation, and sustainable development across the continent.
She highlighted Ghana’s pivotal role in hosting the AfCFTA Secretariat and reiterated GFZA’s commitment to fostering investment and economic growth through streamlined processes and enhanced regulatory support.
Reflecting on the day’s significance, Dr. Awusi stated, “African Union Day is not just a celebration of our shared history but a call to action for our collective future. It is a reminder that our strength lies in our unity and our commitment to building a prosperous Africa for all.”
She also acknowledged the efforts of Ghana’s founding fathers, including Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, in championing Pan-Africanism and the vision of a united continent.

Dr. Awusi concluded her message with a rallying call:
“One Africa. One Voice. One Future.
Happy African Union Day.”
The African Union Day is celebrated annually on May 25 to commemorate the founding of the OAU in 1963, which was later transformed into the AU in 2002. The day serves as a reminder of the continent’s journey towards unity, peace, and development.
As Africa continues to navigate the challenges of the 21st century, leaders like Dr. Awusi are calling for renewed commitment to the ideals of the AU and the realization of Agenda 2063, the continent’s strategic framework for inclusive and sustainable development.
