THE 2025 INTERNATIONAL Women’s Day celebrations in Ghana served as a rallying point for gender equality, with Vice President Her Excellency Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang pledging stronger support for women’s empowerment.

In her keynote speech, the Vice President reaffirmed the government’s commitment to breaking barriers that hinder women’s progress, including economic inequality, gender-based violence and limited educational opportunities.

A key highlight was the renewed effort to keep girls in school, with the supply of sanitary pads officially reinstated – a policy first championed during President John Dramani Mahama’s previous administration.

She also emphasized the crucial role of traditional leaders, particularly Queen Mothers, in advocating for women’s rights at the community level.

Additionally, she called for the swift passage of the Affirmative Action Act to increase women’s representation in decision-making spaces.

“With collective action, we can build a society where every woman and girl can rise to her full potential,” Veep affirmed.

With a firm stance against violence and discrimination, the Vice President’s speech reinvigorated the women’s movement in Ghana, as the nation continues working toward a fairer and more inclusive future.
