AS GHANA marks its 68th Independence Anniversary, the nation also reflects on one of the defining moments in its journey to freedom – the 28th February Crossroads Shooting Incident.
Seventy-seven years ago, Ghanaian ex-servicemen who had bravely fought in World War II returned home expecting the fair compensation and pensions promised them by the British colonial government.
However, their pleas for justice were repeatedly ignored. Frustrated by the injustices, these veterans decided to take a stand, marching peacefully to present a petition.

But their peaceful protest was met with violence. British colonial police opened fire on the unarmed veterans, killing three and wounding many others. This tragic event sparked widespread outrage and this intensified the fight for Ghana’s independence.
Today, as the nation commemorates this pivotal moment, we honour the bravery of these ex-servicemen who not only fought on foreign battlefields but also stood up for justice at home. Their sacrifice played a crucial role in Ghana’s liberation, paving the way for independence on 6th March 1957.

The theme for this year’s anniversary, “Reflect, Review, Reset,” calls on Ghanaians to remember their history, learn from the past and continue building a just and prosperous nation.
