THE FIRST MINISTER-DESIGNATE for the Youth Development and Empowerment Ministry, George Opare Addo, has reiterated his commitment to addressing illegal mining and empowering Ghanaian youth.
Speaking during his vetting, the minister-designate alluded to the destructive effects of illegal mining and outlined a vision for sustainable mining practices underpinned by collaboration with the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources.
According to Opare Addo, the key to eradicating illegal mining lies in tackling poverty and providing alternative livelihoods.

He explained, “Where there is gold and poverty, people will find ways to mine illegally. We must focus on reducing poverty in these areas and providing sustainable alternatives to mining.”
He emphasized the need to reorient young miners, changing their mindset and equipping them with the tools to engage in responsible mining. This, he noted, aligns with President John Mahama’s vision for reclaiming degraded lands and promoting environmentally friendly practices.

In addition to mining reforms, Opare Addo disclosed plans to work closely with the National Youth Authority (NYA) to enhance its operations.
“The NYA will be a critical partner as we implement President John Mahama’s action plan and policy framework to put youth development at the heart of government,” he noted.

The minister-designate also highlighted the role of youth empowerment in job creation, particularly in agriculture. Through initiatives such as the land-bank system and district mechanization centers, the ministry aims to remove barriers that prevent young people from venturing into farming.
“…our focus will be on providing affordable access to mechanized tools, improved seedlings, fertilizers and training programmes for young farmers,” he added.
Opare Addo, aka Pablo concluded by emphasizing the need for collaboration and policy support from cabinet-level ministries to ensure youth issues are adequately addressed.

“Youth development and empowerment are at the center of JM’s government and my ministry will work tirelessly to achieve results,” he affirmed.
