SENIOR LECTURERS at the University of Education, Winneba (UEW), have announced plans to petition President-elect John Dramani Mahama to investigate Alexander Afenyo-Markin, Majority Leader and Member of Parliament for Effutu, over alleged misconduct during his tenure as Chairman of the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL).

Led by Dr. Alhassan Salifu Bawah, the lecturers claim Afenyo-Markin supervised questionable payments and displayed conflicts of interest while at GWCL. The concerns, previously submitted to the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP), have seen no action under the current administration.

Speaking in an interview on Taken Over News, Dr. Alhassan explained their intention to formally file the petition once Mahama assumes office. “The current administration has not acted on our petition, and we are hopeful that President Mahama will take this seriously and ensure a thorough investigation,” he stated.

The lecturers allege that Afenyo-Markin oversaw inflated contracts worth GHS 14.8 million paid to Intermerc (Gh) Ltd. for projects purportedly valued much lower. They further claimed a conflict of interest, citing the alleged donation of a Toyota Land Cruiser to Afenyo-Markin by the contractor.

H. E. PRESIDENT JOHN DRAMANI MAHAMA, PRESIDENT-ELECT.

“This violates Article 284 of the 1992 Constitution, which bars public officials from engaging in activities where personal interests conflict with official duties,” Dr. Alhassan explained.

The UEW lecturers are optimistic that the incoming National Democratic Congress (NDC) administration will prioritize their petition and promote accountability in the public service.
