THE LEADERSHIP of the National Democratic Congress, NDC in Yunyoo has noted with shock the perpetual silence of the Hon. Member of Parliament Oscar Liwal over the plight of the constituents following a heavy downpour fortnight ago which rendered many homeless.
It has been two weeks after the torrential rains caused havoc, destroyed bridges and caused irreparable damage to residential buildings in the Yunyoo Constituency of the North East region of Ghana. The residents of Yunyoo-Nasuan district have been rendered homeless and their roads impassable as a result of the torrential downpour.
Many residents are still in total shock and disbelief at the rate of devastation to farms, homes, stores, bridges and road infrastructure in the district. The already deplorable roads have been worsened as a result of this precarious situation of the rainfall.
As a responsible opposition party leadership, we are appealing to duty bearers in the Constituency to rise up to the occasion and fix the deplorable roads in the district. We, again, want to remind the President His Excellency Nana Addo Danquah Akufo Addo that the time to fulfill his promise of fixing the roads in Yunyoo when he visited the district in August, 2022 and made a solemn pledge to the Paramount Chief of Yunyoo traditional area could not have come at better time than now. The district cannot pride itself of one single kilometer of graveled road neither to talk of tarred road since it’s inception. The people of Yunyoo-Nasuan demand their legitimate and fair share of the “Years of roads initiative”.
We are also calling on the Member of Parliament Hon. Oscar Liwal and the District Chief Executive Hon. Bitian Konlan to as a matter of urgency fix the broken Jimbale bridge which links the district to Bunkpurugu to enable motorists access Jimbale and Gbenteri markets.
All areas in the constituency and or district including but not limited to Namong, Gbeduri, Jimbale, Mantana cannot access Gbintri in the East Mamprusi district where we have the biggest market. Last week, we lost a brother from Nangnan to the flood between Gbeduri and Gbintri.
Namong to Mozio is terribly bad. Gbankurugu and Gbingbani and its surrounding communities cannot access Wencheki and Chereponi markets where a lot of the constituents access markets for petty trading to take care of their families.
Accessing Yunyoo from Jimbale which is about 3 kilometers is a nightmare. People have not had lights over the last two weeks simply because VRA cannot access the communities by road to restore power.
As a representative of the people it is our understanding that the basic and fundamental function of the Hon Member of Parliament is to represent the opinions and interests of his constituents and ultimately reflect and serve those interests.
In this connection, he ( the Hon. MP) serves as the intermediary between his constituents and the central government. Put differently, he serves as the mouthpiece of the people in Parliament and in government. In this regard, he serves as a conveyor belt and expresses the grievances of the people to seek governmental attention.
We have seen other MPs from other constituencies in the NER as well as constituencies elsewhere execute this basic responsibility to the admiration of their beloved constituents and Ghanaians. Unfortunately, same cannot be said about the Hon. Member of Parliament for Yunyoo Oscar Liwal.
We thought the Hon. MP should have used this as an agenda setting strategy to come with media personnel into the constituency to cover the devastation and draw government attention to the plight of the ordinary citizen in Yunyoo Nasuan district. Unfortunately, the MP has turned his back against the very people who sent him to the National Assembly.
Parliament is on recess and we thought it would have afforded the Hon. MP the honey moon to visit his constituents and sympathize with them following the devastation by the rainfall but like a trembling bird before its prey we waited in perpetual silence. How long shall we wait in silence? We are perplexed by this singular act of the MP and we are by this medium appealing to him and the government to rise up to their task in Yunyoo Nasuan district.
