PRESIDENT JOHN Dramani Mahama has reiterated his dedication to maintaining the independence of the Bank of Ghana, emphasizing that economic policies should be based on sound financial principles rather than political pressures.
At the swearing-in ceremony for Dr. Johnson Pandit Kwesi Asiama as the new Governor and Dr. Zakari Mumuni as First Deputy Governor, Mahama highlighted the necessity of responsible fiscal management and strict adherence to regulatory frameworks to avert economic crises.
“When governments engage in unsustainable spending and unchecked money printing, the repercussions are dire – diminishing incomes and pushing millions into poverty,” he cautioned.
The newly appointed leaders, both experienced economists with extensive backgrounds at the Bank, have been entrusted with the responsibility of restoring stability and confidence in the financial sector. Mahama encouraged them to collaborate closely with key institutions while preserving their independence to protect Ghana’s economic future.
