Ghana Gears Up for 68th Independence Day with Historic Commemorations and National Events

GHANA is gearing up to commemorate its 68th Independence Anniversary with a series of national events organized by the National Celebrations Planning Committee (NCPC).

The lineup includes historical commemorations, school competitions and a ceremonial parade, aimed at engaging the public, especially the youth, in honouring the nation’s past.

The activities will kick off with the Commemoration of the 28th February Crossroad Shooting Incident on Friday, February 28, 2025, to remember the sacrifices of ex-servicemen who protested for their rights in 1948.

Other key events include:

Finals of a nationwide school quiz competition  – Sunday, March 2, 2025

Nationwide debate competition finals – Tuesday, March 4, 2025

President’s School Children Awards Programme –  Wednesday, March 5, 2025

Independence Anniversary Ceremonial Parade at the Presidency – Thursday, March 6, 2025

A New Approach to the 28th February Event

As part of efforts to reignite public interest, the NCPC’s Communications Subcommittee will roll out historical and educational content across television, radio and social media. This will include:

Historical narratives on the events leading to the 1948 shooting of three ex-servicemen.

An X-Space conversation themed “Changing Face of Civil Protests in Ghana: Lessons from the Past and Present”.

Engagements with media houses to promote public discussions on the anniversary theme.

A Wreath Laying Ceremony at the Nationalism Park, set for 8 a.m. on February 28, 2025, to be broadcast live and streamed online.

Ghanaians are encouraged to participate actively by engaging in discussions, sharing information and tuning in to the various events.

Speaking on behalf of the Presidency, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Minister for Government Communications, emphasized the need to remember and honour the nation’s heroes while fostering greater public participation in the celebrations.
