Dr. Dominic Akuritinga Ayine, Ghana’s Attorney General and Minister of Justice has made an explosive claim about judicial bias in politically charged cases, questioning the conduct of certain judges and the executive branch’s “inducements” in ongoing prosecutions.
At a press briefing in Accra, Dr. Ayine criticized judges handling cases against former officials, stating that some of them had acted with hostility towards the accused while favouring the prosecution.
He singled out Justice Honyenuga in the Republic v. Opuni trial, accusing him of unilaterally expunging exculpatory evidence and undermining the fair trial rights of the accused.
He also cited the sudden transfer of Justice Anokye Gyimah, who had ordered a de novo (fresh) trial in the same case, as evidence of executive interference. More controversially, he alleged that some judges had been promoted while presiding over sensitive political trials, creating a perception of influence peddling.
Dr. Akuritinga insisted that the justice system must remain neutral, warning that judicial bias and executive interference could damage public trust. His remarks have sparked a heated debate, with some calling for an independent inquiry into judicial independence in Ghana.
