A HEATED session of Parliament’s Appointments Committee today, took an unexpected turn when the Clerk to the Committee, Mrs. Gifty Jiage, came under verbal attack from the Minority side, led by Ranking Member Hon. Afenyo-Markin.
Eyewitnesses report that Afenyo-Markin, in a tense exchange, accused the Clerk of partisanship, calling her a “Partisan Clerk” and reportedly exclaiming, “You this woman, shame on you! Shame on you!”
The incident has sparked widespread condemnation, with many calling for an immediate end to what they describe as a disturbing trend of hostility within Parliament.
Political analyst Peter Bamfo has strongly criticized the attack, describing it as an affront to the integrity and dignity of Ghana’s legislative body. He emphasized that Parliament must remain a space for mutual respect and cooperation, regardless of political affiliations.
“The Clerk, as a high-ranking official, plays a crucial role in ensuring the smooth operation of parliamentary proceedings. Any form of verbal or physical assault on her is unacceptable and must not be tolerated,” Bamfo stated.
He further expressed concerns over the growing hostility within Parliament, citing recent incidents, including the destruction of parliamentary property, as troubling signs of declining decorum.
“This is not leadership,” he said. “Parliament must be a forum for constructive debate, not a battleground for aggression and intimidation.”
Observers have called on all Members of Parliament to reflect on their conduct and uphold the values of civility and respect. Many believe such incidents tarnish the image of Ghana’s legislative body and send the wrong message to the public about the behavior expected of elected officials.

As tensions continue to rise within Parliament, there are growing calls for measures to ensure that parliamentary proceedings remain respectful, professional, and in line with democratic principles.
What Happens Next?
It remains to be seen whether any disciplinary action will be taken against those involved in the verbal attack. However, many Ghanaians are hoping that Parliament will take a firm stance against actions that threaten the institution’s integrity.
