Afenyo-Markin’s Aggressive Tactics Signal NPP’s Desperation in Vetting Process

OPPOSITION’s INTIMIDATION and Chaos Undermine Parliamentary Proceedings.

The recent disruptions at the Vetting Committee, spearheaded by the Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin and his New Patriotic Party (NPP) colleagues, have raised serious concerns about the opposition’s approach to pellucid democratic parliamentary proceedings.

Their conduct, characterized by intimidation, baseless accusations and outright hostility, suggests a party still struggling to come to terms with its electoral defeat.

Despite being fully aware of the committee’s scheduled proceedings, the NPP Minority initially refused to participate, claiming they were engaged in a caucus meeting. However, they later stormed the session in an aggressive manner, seeking to derail the process with inflammatory statements and unsubstantiated claims.

One of the most striking incidents was Afenyo-Markin’s attempt to brand Oliver Barker-Vormawor as a National Democratic Congress (NDC) member – an allegation swiftly dismissed by Barker-Vormawor himself.

Not stopping there, Afenyo-Markin went further to accuse the Clerk of the Vetting Committee of having NDC affiliations, without providing any evidence. These reckless accusations fueled tensions, with many seeing them as deliberate attempts to discredit individuals and disrupt due process.

Critics argue that the aggressive tone and obstructionist tactics of the NPP signal a party still in disarray, unable to reconcile with its loss of power. Rather than engaging constructively, Afenyo-Markin and his team have resorted to threats and intimidation, undermining the credibility of the vetting process.

This behaviour, many believe, reflects the NPP’s broader strategy of political brinkmanship – one that prioritizes disruption over meaningful engagement.

The Vetting Committee Chairman has emphasized that common sense and rational discourse must prevail over political theatrics. There are now growing calls for decisive action against those seeking to derail proceedings, including possible sanctions against disruptive members.

While the NPP Minority appears determined to use chaos as a tool, the NDC and other stakeholders insist that the vetting process must proceed without being held hostage by political desperation.

The key question now is whether Afenyo-Markin and his team will change course or continue down a path that only further erodes their credibility.
