THE DISCOURSE surrounding George Opare Addo, the newly appointed Minister of Youth Development and Empowerment, following his vetting by the Appointments Committee, has been overshadowed by a campaign of distraction.

PRESIDENT JOHN DRAMANI MAHAMA.

Some detractors, led by elements within the NPP and their allies, have sought to shift public focus to his association with Freemasonry rather than engaging with the substance of his qualifications, vision and work for Ghana’s youth.

This narrative, while sensational, does a disservice to Ghanaians, particularly the youth, who stand to benefit immensely from Opare Addo’s dynamic leadership.

His track record speaks volumes about a leader whose competence far outweighs the need for baseless speculation about his personal faith or affiliations.

A Champion for Youth Development

George Opare Addo, affectionately known as Pablo, is a leader with a proven track record of youth empowerment. As a former Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Akuapem North, he spearheaded initiatives that improved education, health and infrastructure for local communities.

His hands-on approach to governance ensured that resources were channeled toward creating opportunities for young people, from scholarships to skills training programs.

As the National Youth Organizer of the NDC, he redefined youth engagement in politics, making it more inclusive and action-driven. Under his leadership, young people were not just rally participants but active contributors to policy discussions and development strategies.

This is the kind of forward-thinking leadership the Ministry of Youth Development and Empowerment now has the opportunity to harness.

GEORGE OPARE ADDO ESQ (PABLO), MINISTER-DESIGNATE FOR YOUTH DEVELOPMENT AND EMPOWERMENT.

Competence Over Controversy

The obsession with Opare Addo’s Freemasonry affiliation is a diversionary tactic being perpetuated by the NPP, one that ignors his capability to deliver meaningful results.

Freemasonry, a global fraternity, is not a political agenda or a religious movement. It is irrelevant to his capacity to lead and bring development to Ghana’s youth.

What Ghanaians should focus on is his bold vision for the ministry. Opare Addo has already outlined plans to revamp youth empowerment programs, promote skills acquisition, and create platforms for young people to thrive in entrepreneurship and governance.

His vision aligns with the aspirations of many young Ghanaians who yearn for leaders that prioritize jobs, opportunities and support for their dreams.

A Vision for Empowerment

Opare Addo’s appointment is an opportunity to reset the narrative around youth leadership in Ghana. His plans include:

1. Youth Skills Development and Job Creation: He aims to establish partnerships with technical and vocational training institutions to equip young people with employable skills while fostering an entrepreneurial mindset.

2. Promoting Entrepreneurship: Recognizing the high unemployment rate, Opare Addo is committed to equipping young people with resources and mentorship to start and sustain their businesses, supported by partnerships with financial institutions and development agencies.

3. Institutionalizing Youth Participation in Governance: He seeks to ensure young voices are integral to decision-making processes by creating platforms for their contributions to national policy formulation.

4. Collaborative Job Creation Efforts: Opare Addo envisions a multi-sectoral approach to solving youth unemployment by collaborating with the Youth Employment Authority, the Ministry of Sports, and other relevant ministries.

This partnership aims to design and implement comprehensive training programs that align with market demands. Through these efforts, young people will be provided with hands-on training in technical skills, sports management and entrepreneurship.

This initiative will also prioritize linking graduates of such programmes to sustainable job opportunities across industries, creating a robust pipeline of youth employment nationwide.

This collaborative framework highlights Opare Addo’s commitment to breaking the silos between government agencies and fostering a unified strategy for youth empowerment.

These are not mere promises; they are actionable plans informed by years of experience working with young people and understanding their needs.

A Call to Focus on Progress

It is high time Ghanaians rejected distractions and focused on what truly matters – results. George Opare Addo’s competence, vision and track record show he is the right person to lead the Ministry of Youth Development and Empowerment at this critical juncture. The challenges facing Ghana’s youth are too urgent to be sidetracked by unfounded controversies.

Let us evaluate leaders by their actions and not their affiliations. In Opare Addo, Ghana has a leader who is not only capable but also deeply committed to building a future where young people have the tools they need to succeed. That should be the focus, not his faith, fraternity or personal beliefs.

As Ghanaians, we must rally behind leaders with vision and integrity, leaders who are ready to serve with distinction. George Opare Addo is one such leader. Let’s give him the support he needs to make a lasting impact.
