Story By Muhammed Faisal Mustapha & Felix Ernest Odamtten

HON. ALHAJI Ibrahim Abdul Rauf Tanko has built a reputation as one of Ghana’s experienced public servants whose political journey has been driven by commitment to the people, especially at the grassroots.

Over the years, he has served in Parliament, public administration, party leadership and agriculture, earning respect for his dedication to development and good governance.

His political career gained national attention in 2004 when he became the first Member of Parliament for the newly created Yagaba-Kubori Constituency. His election marked a new chapter for the constituency, as residents looked forward to improved representation and faster development.

The confidence of the people was reaffirmed in the 2008 general election when he retained his parliamentary seat. In 2016, he once again won the constituency for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), demonstrating the trust many voters continued to place in his leadership.

During his years in Parliament, Hon. Tanko served on several important committees, including the Judiciary Committee, Roads and Transport Committee, Standing Orders Committee, the Select Committee on Agriculture and Cocoa Affairs, and the Committee on Members Holding Office of Profit. Through these roles, he contributed to discussions on agriculture, infrastructure, justice, parliamentary reforms and national development.

HON. IBRAHIMAH,  HAJJ BOARD CHAIRMAN.

His work in Parliament reflected his belief that strong institutions, good laws and effective public service are essential to improving the lives of Ghanaians.

Beyond Parliament, he also served on the Board of Architectural and Engineering Services Limited (AESL), where he contributed to the planning and implementation of major public infrastructure projects.

One of his most recognised national assignments has been his leadership of the Ghana Hajj Board. Between 2013 and 2016, under the Office of the President, he served as Chairman of the Board and successfully supervised Hajj arrangements for thousands of Ghanaian Muslims travelling to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

His tenure was widely praised for improving organisation, transparency and the welfare of pilgrims.
In recognition of his experience and commitment to public service, President John Dramani Mahama reappointed him as Chairman of the Ghana Hajj Board in 2025. Under his leadership, Ghana’s Hajj operations have again received widespread commendation for their efficiency, professionalism and transparency.

His work has earned praise not only from the Muslim community but also from many Ghanaians who have applauded the smooth organisation of the annual pilgrimage.

Away from politics, Hon. Tanko is also an accomplished professional. He is trained as a Development Planner, Architect, Quantity Surveyor and Consultant. His technical background has enabled him to contribute meaningfully to discussions on infrastructure, construction, regional planning and national development.

He also has experience in the private sector, having served as Managing Director of Tass Kalia Enterprise Limited. His business background has strengthened his understanding of management, finance and organisational leadership, qualities that have supported his public service career.

Agriculture remains another area close to his heart. As a dedicated rice farmer, Hon. Tanko has consistently promoted modern farming and food security. His hard work and investment in agriculture earned him the 2026 Best Farmer award, highlighting his belief that farming remains one of the strongest pillars of Ghana’s economic growth and rural development.

Within the National Democratic Congress, Hon. Tanko has remained an influential grassroots leader. Over the years, he has played an active role in strengthening party structures, promoting unity and mobilising support across the North East Region.

As the NDC North East Regional Chairman, he continues to focus on building strong constituency structures, encouraging grassroots participation and preparing the party for future electoral success. His leadership is widely associated with consultation, discipline and teamwork. Beyond party politics, Hon. Tanko has consistently championed issues affecting ordinary Ghanaians. He has advocated improved roads, better healthcare, quality education, agricultural support and increased infrastructure development for Yagaba-Kubori and surrounding communities.

Many political observers believe one of his greatest strengths is his ability to combine political experience with professional expertise. Throughout his career, he has remained active in public service while adapting to changing national priorities and governance challenges.

His journey demonstrates that effective leadership goes beyond holding political office. It requires experience, integrity, practical knowledge and a genuine commitment to improving the lives of the people.

Today, Hon. Alhaji Ibrahim Abdul Rauf Tanko continues to stand out as one of the National Democratic Congress’ seasoned leaders in the North East Region. Whether through Parliament, public administration, agriculture, professional practice or grassroots mobilisation, his contributions continue to shape development and strengthen democratic governance in Ghana.

His story remains an example of how dedication, experience and service to the people can leave a lasting impact on communities and the nation as a whole.
