THE DEPUTY Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Krachi East Constituency, Abigail Obenewah, has called on more women to actively participate in politics to help bridge the gender gap in leadership and decision-making.
Speaking as a candidate in the party’s constituency elections, Ms. Obenewah said women have an important role to play in shaping the country’s future and should not allow cultural or societal barriers to discourage them from pursuing political careers.
According to her, although progress has been made in promoting women’s rights and empowerment, women remain underrepresented in politics and public leadership.
She said many women face challenges such as limited opportunities, inadequate resources and negative perceptions, making it difficult for them to enter the political space. However, she stressed that these challenges should not prevent women from contributing to national development.
Ms. Obenewah noted that politics is not only about winning elections but also about influencing policies and making decisions that improve the lives of citizens.
She said greater female representation in politics would bring diverse ideas and experiences into governance, leading to more balanced and inclusive policies.
The NPP deputy secretary added that women in leadership often pay greater attention to issues such as education, healthcare, child welfare and gender equality, which are essential to community and national development.
She expressed confidence that increasing the number of women in politics would strengthen grassroots governance and inspire more young women and girls to pursue leadership positions.
Ms. Obenewah also encouraged women to support one another instead of competing against each other, saying unity and mentorship would help more women overcome the challenges they face in politics.
She appealed to political parties, community leaders and the public to create an environment that gives women equal opportunities to contest elections and contribute meaningfully to decision-making.
According to her, achieving gender equality in politics is not only about protecting women’s rights but also about building a more inclusive, fair and progressive society.
Ms. Obenewah therefore urged women across the Krachi East Municipality and the country to be confident, get involved in politics and make their voices heard, stressing that Ghana’s development requires the active participation of both men and women.
