DEPUTY Minister of Transport, Hon. Dorcas Toffey, has announced new measures aimed at reducing traffic congestion and improving public transport in Accra.

Speaking to the media, she said the Vice President, Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyeman, recently visited the Ministry of Transport and held meetings with the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) and other transport unions.

These discussions, she noted, have already started bringing positive changes to the transport sector.
Hon. Toffey explained that she personally visited some of Accra’s most congested areas to better understand the situation.

As a result, the Ministry has deployed more buses, while transport unions have agreed to reduce fares to encourage more vehicles to operate on the roads.

She also announced that new buses will soon be added to the system. According to her, during an official visit to Egypt, she inspected Metro Mass Transit buses, and arrangements have been made for 300 of these buses to be brought into Ghana.

She revealed that the first batch of buses is expected to arrive by February 15, 2026, with another 100 arriving a month later. By April 2026, all 300 buses are expected to be fully operational. She added that private investors have also shown interest in partnering with the government to bring in more vehicles.

The Deputy Minister said these efforts are aimed at making traffic congestion a thing of the past. She explained that when the current government took office, many public transport vehicles were in poor condition. However, 15 Metro Mass buses have recently been repaired, bringing the number of operational buses to over 135.

Hon. Dorcas Toffey assured the public that the Minister of Transport, Hon. Joseph Bukari Nikpe, and his team are working hard to revive the transport sector and that Ghanaians will soon feel the positive impact.
