THE GENERAL Secretary of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC), Fiifi Fiavi Kwetey, has strongly criticized calls for President John Dramani Mahama to seek a third term in office.
He described such calls as clear signs of “sycophancy” and said they do not serve the interests of either Ghana or the NDC.
According to Mr. Kwetey, those pushing for a third-term agenda are more concerned about pleasing individuals for personal gain than working for the good of the country and the party. He warned that this kind of behaviour goes against the core values on which the NDC was founded.

To support his argument, Mr. Kwetey referred to the party’s late founder, Jerry John Rawlings. He noted that after Rawlings completed his two constitutionally allowed terms, no one encouraged him to stay in power or seek a third term.
This, he said, showed respect for the Constitution and the principles of democracy. Mr. Kwetey made these remarks during the December 31 commemoration of the revolution. He described the calls for a third term as irresponsible and urged party leaders to speak out against them. “It is painful to see so much sycophancy entering our party,” he said.

“Some people believe that praising a leader is the only way for them to survive politically. That is why they talk about a third term. It is nothing but bootlicking of the highest order.”
He reminded party members that the NDC was built to serve the people of Ghana, not to promote personal ambitions. Quoting the well-known party saying, “Cadres may come and cadres may go, but the revolution remains,” he stressed that the party is bigger than any individual.

Mr. Kwetey further explained that leaders come, serve their time, and move on. He mentioned that Jerry Rawlings and former President John Evans Atta Mills both served the country and handed over power when their time was up. In the same way, he said President Mahama is currently serving the party and the nation and will also step aside when the time comes.
He concluded by urging party members to focus on unity, discipline, and the collective good of Ghana rather than selfish interests.
