DR. MOHAMMED AHMED GEDEL.

A FREE breast cancer screening exercise has been held at the Nima CDR Community Centre to raise awareness about early detection and breast health among women in the Ayawaso East Constituency of Accra.

The outreach was led by Dr. Alhaji Mohammed Ahmed Gedel, in collaboration with the Atomic Energy Commission Hospital and the Radiological and Medical Sciences Research Institute.

According to Dr. Gedel, the initiative is part of ongoing efforts to encourage women to prioritise regular breast checks and to demystify breast cancer through education and early diagnosis.

Team leader, Dr. Adolf Kofi Awua, stressed that early detection is key to saving lives. “Breast cancer, when detected early, can be treated more effectively, significantly improving the chances of survival,” he explained.

He advised women to perform monthly breast self-examinations to become familiar with the normal look and feel of their breasts. This, he said, makes it easier to detect any changes and seek timely medical attention.

As part of the screening, other health services such as blood pressure, malaria, sugar level, and temperature checks were also offered to participants.

Dr. Awua further cautioned that self-examinations should not be done during menstruation, as hormonal changes can cause temporary lumps. He also encouraged men to support their partners in maintaining breast health awareness.

“This simple habit of knowing your body and checking monthly can save lives,” he added.

The screening forms part of a broader community health campaign aimed at reducing cancer-related deaths through education, prevention, and early intervention.

Organisers hope the outreach will empower more women to take control of their health and break the silence surrounding breast cancer.
