AS PART of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the Member of Parliament for Okaikwei North, Hon. Theresa Lardi Awuni, has organized a free breast cancer screening exercise for women in her constituency to promote early detection and health education.
Addressing the media during the event, Hon. Awuni stressed the importance of regular breast checks and medical screenings.
She urged women to make breast self-examination a regular routine — not just in October — highlighting that early detection could save lives. “Breast cancer is not a death sentence if it is found early,” she said, also encouraging men to support their partners in checking for unusual changes.

Hon. Awuni emphasized that the health and well-being of her constituents are a top priority. “I don’t need to wait for elections before caring for my people. This is part of my responsibility as their representative,” she said.
The free screening, which started in 2020, has become a regular feature in her constituency, organized in collaboration with assembly members.
Beyond breast cancer detection, the screenings have also revealed other hidden health issues — including cases of HIV — allowing for early medical intervention.
Recognizing that many market women in places like Lapaz are unable to visit health facilities due to their busy schedules, Hon. Awuni also used the occasion to offer free services such as birth certificate registration, Ghana Card processing, and National Health Insurance enrollment.

She encouraged those referred for further treatment to take the recommendations seriously. “Being diagnosed with HIV is not the end of life — with proper treatment, people can live long and healthy lives,” she said. “Even untreated malaria can be more deadly.”
Hon. Theresa Lardi Awuni reaffirmed her commitment to improving healthcare access in Okaikwei North, stating that her motivation comes from a genuine love for her constituents and a desire to see them healthy, empowered, and productive.
