HON. RUDOLPH Collingwoode-Williams, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Ayawaso Central says youth unemployment remains a major challenge in the municipality; but efforts are underway to tackle it through skills training and apprenticeship programmes.
Speaking in an interview with Nationaltymes.com, he said one of the biggest barriers is changing the mindset of young people.
“Many of our youth are drawn to quick money through drugs or shortcuts, and that makes it difficult to encourage them into meaningful careers or apprenticeship training,” he noted. “But gradually, we are making progress in educating them about the importance of skilled labour.”
He stated that the job market is shifting globally toward hands-on skills, not just white-collar jobs.
“Even in developed countries, it’s skilled labour that drives development. That’s the direction we need to take. Whether it’s hairdressing, mechanics, engineering, or other trades, these are all valuable.”

The MCE highlighted both government and local efforts in supporting youth employment. “The President has introduced several initiatives like One Million Coders, apprenticeship support programmes, and skills training in areas like poultry farming (nkukor nkiti nkiti) and hairdressing etc.,” he said.
He added that the Member of Parliament for Ayawaso Central, Abdul-Rauf Tubazu is also playing a vital role. “The MP has launched his own apprenticeship programme to support youth who may not benefit directly from government-run ones.”

The Assembly, he noted, is also working to provide spaces for trained youth to start their businesses. “Once they complete their training, we want to ensure they have a place to work legally and safely, helping to reduce unemployment and discourage drug use.”
Hon. Rudolph Collingwoode-Williams, affectionately called Ayawaso Central General, ended by stressing that addressing youth unemployment requires collaboration from government, the assembly, and the community. “It’s a serious issue, but with the right support and mindset, we can overcome it.”
