HON. ALHAJI Ibrahim Abdul-Rauf Tanko has earned a reputation as one of the National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) most experienced grassroots leaders, with a career spanning Parliament, public administration, agriculture and party organisation. His journey reflects decades of dedication to public service and the development of his people.

His political rise began in 2004 when he became the first Member of Parliament for the newly created Yagaba-Kubori Constituency. The historic victory gave him the opportunity to champion the development needs of the area and give the constituency a stronger voice in national affairs.

His performance won him another term in Parliament in 2008. In 2016, he reclaimed the seat for the NDC, demonstrating his enduring popularity and strong connection with the people.

During his years in Parliament, Hon. Tanko served on several key committees, including the Judiciary Committee, Roads and Transport Committee, Standing Orders Committee, Select Committee on Agriculture and Cocoa Affairs, and the Committee on Members Holding Office of Profit. Through these roles, he contributed to debates and policies on agriculture, transport, governance, infrastructure and institutional reforms.

His commitment to national development also saw him serve on the Board of Architectural and Engineering Services Limited (AESL), where he helped support public infrastructure planning and development.

Beyond Parliament, Hon. Tanko made a significant impact as Chairman of the Ghana Hajj Board between 2013 and 2016 under the Office of the President. He supervised the organisation of Hajj for thousands of Ghanaian Muslims, earning praise for improving efficiency, accountability and the welfare of pilgrims.

Recognising his experience and leadership, President John Dramani Mahama reappointed him as Chairman of the Ghana Hajj Board in 2025. Under his stewardship, Ghana’s recent Hajj operations have received widespread commendation for their transparency, professionalism and smooth organisation.

Away from politics, Hon. Tanko is an accomplished Development Planner, Architect, Quantity Surveyor and Consultant. His technical background has strengthened his contributions to public policy, especially in infrastructure and regional development.

He also gained valuable management experience as Managing Director of Tass Kalia Enterprise Limited, where he built practical expertise in business leadership and organisational management.

Agriculture remains another area close to his heart. As a dedicated rice farmer, Hon. Tanko’s commitment to food production earned him the 2026 Best Farmer award. The recognition reflects his belief that agriculture remains central to Ghana’s economic growth and rural transformation.

Within the NDC, Hon. Tanko has built a reputation as a respected organiser and grassroots mobiliser. His years of service have helped strengthen party structures and unity across the North East Region.

As North East Regional Chairman of the party, he continues to focus on strengthening constituency structures, promoting grassroots participation and preparing the party for future electoral success through discipline, unity and effective organisation.

Throughout his public life, Hon. Tanko has consistently advocated better roads, quality education, improved healthcare, modern agriculture and expanded infrastructure for communities within Yagaba-Kubori and beyond.

HON. ALHAJI IBRAHIM ABDUL-RAUF TANKO.

Observers say one of his greatest strengths is his ability to combine political experience with professional expertise. His background in governance, technical practice and farming has enabled him to approach leadership from both policy and practical perspectives.

From Parliament to public administration, agriculture and party leadership, Hon. Alhaji Ibrahim Abdul Rauf Tanko has remained committed to serving the people. His long record of service continues to inspire confidence and stands as an example of leadership rooted in experience, humility and grassroots development.

For many in the North East Region, his story is not only about political success but also about a lifelong commitment to improving lives and contributing to Ghana’s democratic and socio-economic development.
