ONE the leading members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Godwin Ako Gunn, has strongly criticized the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) over the arrest and detention of private legal practitioner Lawyer Matin Kpebu.
Sharing his concerns in a public statement, Ako Gunn said he was shocked after listening to Kpebu’s interview following his release.
According to him, it was unacceptable for the OSP to invite Kpebu to its office and allow junior officers to “disrespect and manhandle” him, especially when he was not under investigation.
He described the incident as a “low point” for Special Prosecutor Kissi Agyebeng, stressing that the action appeared targeted and personal.

Ako Gunn said the arrest has convinced many people—himself included—that concerns about the conduct of the OSP boss may be justified. He argued that if Kpebu indeed has 15 allegations against the OSP, the professional response should be to address them, not to intimidate him.
“Anyone following the events will easily conclude that Kissi Agyebeng is being intolerant,” he stated.
He also criticised the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) for what he called the “negative mindset” behind the creation of the OSP, saying the institution has failed to deliver on its anti-corruption promise.

Ako Gunn noted that President John Mahama has recently expressed frustration over corruption issues revealed at the Public Accounts Committee, and stressed that the OSP should focus on solving real corruption problems rather than engaging in “pettiness”.
He ended by calling for an unqualified apology from the OSP to Lawyer Kpebu, saying Ghanaians deserve better from state institutions.
“We have come a long way as a people,” he said. “Let’s keep hope alive. Better days are ahead.”
