THE PRIVATE Newspapers and Online News Publishers Association of Ghana (PRINPAG) has praised the Government of Ghana for proposing the creation of a National Media Fund to support the country’s media sector.

According to PRINPAG, the fund comes at a time when many media houses—especially small and privately owned outlets—are struggling with rising operational costs, low advertising revenue, limited training opportunities, and growing financial pressure.
The association says these challenges threaten the independence and survival of the media, making government support both timely and necessary.
PRINPAG also commended President John Dramani Mahama for his renewed commitment to strengthening the media. The association recalled that the idea of a national media support system was first introduced during his earlier administration but was not fully implemented before 2016.
They expressed confidence that the President’s leadership will help bring the initiative to life this time.
While welcoming the proposal, PRINPAG urged the government to speed up the steps needed to establish and operationalize the Media Development Fund so journalists and media organisations can receive timely support.
The association further recommended that the fund be managed through a transparent and independent structure. It proposed the creation of a dedicated Secretariat, the appointment of a Fund Administrator, and the establishment of an Independent Board made up of qualified and experienced professionals.

PRINPAG called on all media stakeholders, civil society groups, development partners, the private sector, and the general public to back the initiative and help strengthen Ghana’s media landscape. A strong and independent media, it noted, is essential for protecting democracy, promoting accountability, and supporting national development.
The statement was signed by PRINPAG President David Tamakloe and Public Affairs & External Relations Officer Emmanuel Opare Djan.
