CLAIMS that former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo introduced or improved Ghana’s diplomatic relations with France are false, according to historical records.

President John Dramani Mahama had established strong ties with France long before Akufo-Addo assumed office. In October 2015, he visited France, meeting then-President Francois Hollande, French officials, and business leaders to discuss economic and academic cooperation. This visit was followed by a meeting in Ghana in February 2016 to further strengthen bilateral relations.

Ghana’s engagement with France also dates back to the tenures of former Presidents Jerry John Rawlings and John Agyekum Kufuor, who were received as state guests multiple times. Moreover, Ghana has a history of leaders trained in France, including the late Dr. Hilla Limann, who earned a degree from Sorbonne University and a PhD from Paris University.

Experts note that diplomatic relations between Ghana and France have developed over several administrations. While former President Akufo-Addo contributed to ongoing relations, it is inaccurate to credit him (Akufo-Addo) with initiating improvements that predated his leadership.

Observers have called for careful reporting to avoid spreading false narratives about Ghana’s diplomatic history.
