THE AYAWASO Central Municipal Assembly is set to begin the construction of a modern Mallam Atta Market, making it part of Ghana’s upcoming 24-hour market policy led by the Mahama-led NDC government.

Speaking to the media after on Tuesday,  September 16, 2025, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Hon. Rudolph Collingwoode-Williams, announced that Phase I of the project is ready to kick off, with funding already secured.

The first phase will include key facilities such as:
– A school for the children of traders
– A clinic for health emergencies
– A fire station
– A police post for 24-hour security
– A proper lorry park for loading and offloading goods

Hon. Collingwoode-Williams.  stressed that Phase I is designed to allow business to continue without major interruption, as traders will be relocated within the new phase before Phase II begins. He added that although the entire project is estimated to take about 36 months, the assembly is focused on meeting its timeline without rushing.

The Municipal Engineer, Abdullah Abdul-Rahman, highlighted the urgent need for a police post and fire station due to the expected round-the-clock operations. He noted that the market’s current state lacks proper security and fire control, risking lives and property.

He also pointed out that Mallam Atta Market, one of the oldest and busiest markets in Accra, lacks a functional lorry station, making goods transport difficult. The new design will correct this.

Market women, drivers, butchers, traditional leaders, and other stakeholders have welcomed the project, which is expected to boost local business, improve safety, and make the market more accessible for both traders and customers.
