PRESIDENTIAL aspirant for the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), Charles Mawusi, has declared his readiness to lead the association into a new era of credibility, innovation, and meaningful transformation.

Speaking to GBC News in Accra ahead of the GJA elections scheduled for June 30, Mr. Mawusi made a compelling case for why he is the right candidate to steer the association forward.

He emphasized that credibility, accountability, and transparency will be at the heart of his administration if elected, noting that the absence of credible leadership has stifled the GJA’s ability to attract funding and meaningful support for journalists’ development.

“You need a strong, visionary leader to address welfare issues. Welfare is a leadership matter. You need radical thinking, innovation, and a business-minded approach to turn the GJA around,” Mawusi stated. “How do we harness the talents of our journalists across the country so they can contribute to their own welfare? That’s the kind of thinking I bring.”

He also pledged to tackle the growing problem of assaults on journalists, outlining a multi-pronged strategy involving legal advocacy, stakeholder engagement, and strategic public awareness campaigns.

Mr. Mawusi identified political actors and certain state agencies as major sources of these attacks and stressed the importance of engaging such groups proactively.

“Beyond press statements, we must engage the very people who attack us. We need to expand the legal committee, add a permanent desk officer from the GJA, and ensure aggressive follow-ups. A permanent strategy, not reactionary pressers, is what we need,” he stressed.

NATIONALLY ACCEPTED ‘INCOMING’ GJA PRESIDENT, CHARLES MAWUSI.

Mr. Mawusi praised the ongoing efforts of lawyer Samson Lardy Anyenini and his legal team, but called for structural improvements, including regular reporting to GJA executives and sustained advocacy to ensure justice for assaulted journalists.

As the election nears, Charles Mawusi is positioning himself as the preferred candidate with the bold vision, practical ideas, and strong leadership Ghanaian journalists need to protect press freedom, uplift professional standards, and ensure that the GJA becomes a force for national development.
