IN A SIGNIFICANT move to honour its founder, the late former President Jerry John Rawlings, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has announced plans to rename its national headquarters as “Jerry Rawlings House” and designate June as “NDC Month.”
The announcement was made by NDC National Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketiah during the 46th anniversary of the June 4 uprising, held at Agormanya Lasi Park in the Eastern Region.
He revealed that the party’s Functional Executive Committee (FEC) has approved these proposals, pending ratification by the National Executive Committee (NEC).
“Party headquarters across the world are named after their founders. Ghana cannot be an exception. We will begin the process to rename our national headquarters as Rawlings House,” Asiedu Nketiah stated.
In addition to renaming the headquarters, the NDC plans to amend its constitution to designate June 22, Rawlings’ birthday, as a significant party day.
The entire month of June is proposed to be commemorated annually as “NDC Month,” celebrating the party’s history and values.
These initiatives aim to embed Rawlings’ legacy into the party’s institutional identity, reflecting his towering influence on Ghana’s political landscape.
Rawlings, who led Ghana from 1981 to 2001, is credited with transitioning the country to a multi-party democracy and implementing significant economic reforms.

The NDC’s efforts to honour Rawlings come amid discussions about the party’s connection to its founder’s legacy. Some party members have previously expressed concerns about preserving Rawlings’ contributions to the party and the nation.
As the NDC moves forward with these plans, the party seeks to reinforce its foundational principles and inspire unity among its members, ensuring that Rawlings’ vision continues to guide its future endeavours.
