JOHN ABDULLAI JINAPOR, ENERGY MINISTER.

ITALTALIAN ENERGY giant Eni and its Offshore Cape Three Points (OCTP) partners have commenced a high-impact drilling campaign targeting the Cenomanian reservoir of the Sankofa field.

The move marks a fresh phase in Ghana’s offshore oil strategy amid global energy transitions.

The campaign centers on drilling the SNKE-1X ST2 well, a side-track of an existing well, with the aim of boosting long-term production in the region. Operations began on May 28, 2025, following the arrival of the Saipem Deep Value Driller (DVD) – a 7th Generation state-of-the-art drillship – from Côte d’Ivoire.

Scheduled to span four (4) to six (6) months, the single-rig campaign is designed to be both cost-effective and operationally efficient, reflecting joint efforts by Eni and Ghanaian authorities to optimize resource development.

This new well could unlock an estimated 6.2 million stock tank barrels (MMstb) of oil during the license period. The project builds on the success of 21 previous Eni wells, delivered on time and within budget.

Extensive stakeholder engagement initiatives were conducted ahead of the drilling, promoting cooperation with coastal communities and underlining Eni’s commitment to environmental and social responsibility.

Government officials say the project reflects a renewed global investor confidence in Ghana’s regulatory environment and energy future, reaffirming the country’s role as a serious player in the offshore oil arena.
