A student of Home School Junior High School at Kaajanor, a suburb of La Dade-Kotopon Municipality in Accra, sustained serious injuries after a section of the school’s dilapidated classroom roof collapsed during morning assembly.
The incident occurred on Friday when part of the wooden roofing frame of a two-unit classroom block suddenly fell, striking a Form 2 (Basic 8) student on the head. The boy bled profusely and was rushed to the La Polyclinic in a private car for emergency treatment before being sent home.
Following the incident, officials from the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) and the Works Department of the La Dade-Kotopon Municipal Assembly inspected the site and immediately declared the two-unit classroom block a danger zone.
Overcrowding and Learning Disruptions
The closure of the damaged structure has worsened an already dire situation at the school. Home School JHS, which has a student population of approximately 420 (258 boys and 232 girls) with about 26 teachers, now faces severe classroom congestion.

Headmistress Madam Patience Ahiadzi explained that students from the condemned block had to be merged with other classes, creating overcrowded and unconducive learning conditions. She warned that if authorities do not intervene swiftly, the pressure on students and teachers could negatively impact teaching and learning.

Lack of Funds for School Infrastructure
According to information gathered by NationalTyme.com, the La Dade-Kotopon Municipal Assembly has been struggling to secure GETFund resources to construct or renovate classrooms.
The lack of funding has left many schools in the municipality in deteriorating conditions, posing safety risks and hampering education.

With the latest incident at Home School JHS, urgent action is needed to prevent further dangers and ensure that students have a safe environment for learning.
Madam Ahiadzi also hinted that children living around the school always come to play on the school’s compound especially weekends, and she entertaining fears to the effect that these children may go closer to this danger.
