A Women’s Bank: A Game-Changer for Women in Agribusiness, Services, Manufacturing, Trade, and Commerce.
Ahmed M. Gedel Writes:
IN A BOLD move to address the challenges faced by women in Ghana, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has pledged to establish a women’s bank tailored to support women entrepreneurs and small-scale business owners.

This initiative has the potential to revolutionize the economic landscape for Ghanaian women, providing a much-needed “hand up” to unlock their full potential. Opportunities Abound, A women’s bank can support women in various sectors, including:
1. Agribusiness: Access to capital and financial services can enable women farmers to expand their operations, increase productivity, and improve their livelihoods.
2. Services Sector: Women entrepreneurs in the services sector can benefit from financial support to grow their businesses, creating jobs and stimulating economic growth.
3. Manufacturing: Women-led manufacturing businesses can access capital to invest in new technologies, expand production, and compete in local and international markets.
4. Trade and Commerce: Women traders and commerce operators can benefit from financial services, enabling them to expand their businesses, increase trade volumes, and contribute to Ghana’s economic growth.

The proposed women’s bank is a catalyst for change, addressing the unique challenges faced by women entrepreneurs, such as limited access to capital, lack of financial literacy, and gender biases. By providing flexible measures, such as extended maternity leave and access to capital, the bank can help women balance their work and family responsibilities, fostering a more inclusive economic environment.
The establishment of a women’s bank is a call to action, recognizing the critical role women play in Ghana’s economic development. It’s time to empower Ghanaian women, providing them with the tools and resources needed to succeed. As Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang emphasized, “Women do not need handouts. We need a hand up.”
