THE PRESIDENCY has announced a scaled-down commemoration for Ghana’s 68th Independence Day, limiting celebrations to the National and District levels while scrapping regional events.

According to a directive issued on February 12, 2025, by the Presidency, this year’s national celebration will take place at the forecourt of the Presidency. There will be no traditional parade or march past by security agencies and school children.

Regional Ministers have been tasked with ensuring that Municipal, Metropolitan and District Assemblies (MMDAs) scale down celebrations in their districts. However, activities such as the commemoration of the 28th February Crossroads Shooting Incident and the President’s Special Awards for Children will still take place.

Revised Activities for National Celebration:
The revised program for the national event includes:

1. A Guard of Honour mounted by the security agencies

2. Cultural performances and recitals

3. A national address by the President and the Commander-in-Chief of the Ghana Armed Forces.

This marks a significant shift from the usual grand Independence Day celebrations, signaling a more reserved and symbolic observance this year in order to cut down cost.
