VICE-PRESIDENT PROF. JANE NAANA OPOKU-AGYEMANG.

THE NEWLY APPOINTED Greater Accra Regional Minister, Hon. Linda Akweley Ocloo, has sent a strong message to Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs), insisting that they will not be “armchair bosses” under her leadership.

She emphasized that they must be actively present in the field to understand the real challenges communities face and develop practical solutions.

According to her, fieldwork will allow MMDCEs to gather firsthand information, engage with residents and ensure that policies directly address the needs of the people. “They need to be on the ground, not just sitting in their offices. That is the only way they can truly serve their communities,” she stressed.

Crackdown on Buildings on Waterways

As part of her agenda, Hon. Akweley Ocloo has vowed to tackle illegal construction on waterways, a major contributor to Accra’s perennial flooding. She stated that building permits must be issued based on proper assessments, ensuring that structures are not put up in flood-prone areas.

“This time around, building on waterways will not be tolerated,” she warned, adding that stringent measures will be enforced to curb the problem.

Reviving National Sanitation Day to Clean Up Accra

To improve waste management and sanitation, the minister announced the reintroduction of the National Sanitation Day and the Cleanest City Award, aligning with the National Democratic Congress (NDC)’s “Clean Up Ghana” agenda. Under this initiative, a Regional Sanitation Day will be observed on the last Friday of every month, encouraging community participation in keeping Accra clean.

She further revealed plans for a comprehensive sanitation policy, which will promote waste segregation and the provision of garbage bins in public spaces and homes. Sanitation and waste management, she noted, will be key performance indicators for MMDCEs under her tenure.

With these bold initiatives, Hon. Linda Akweley Ocloo is making it clear that her administration is committed to effective leadership, improved sanitation and sustainable urban development in Greater Accra.
