FROM L – R: MR. TETTEY; DR. ASARE & DR. APPIAHENE.

A FORMAL PETITION has been submitted to the Office of the President requesting the removal of Electoral Commission (EC) Chairperson Jean Adukwei Mensah, citing alleged constitutional breaches, incompetence and bias.

The petitioner, Ofosu-Appiah Daniel, accuses the EC Chair of actions that have eroded public confidence in the Electoral Commission. The petition, which was submitted on Monday, January 27, 2025, also calls for the removal of her deputies: Dr. Bossman Asare (Deputy Chairperson in charge of Corporate Affairs/ former TESCON Patron,  Legon), Samuel Tettey (Deputy Chairperson in charge of Operations) and Dr. Peter Appiahene, a member of the Commission’s board, who until his appointment, he was NPP’s Communications Member.

EC BOSS, JEAN ADUKWEI MENSAH.

Invoking Article 146 of Ghana’s 1992 Constitution as the legal foundation, the petitioner alleges gross misconduct, human rights violations and incompetence in the discharge of official duties by Jean Mensa and her deputies.

The petition claims that their actions and inactions have undermined the integrity of the Electoral Commission and violated constitutional provisions, specifically Articles 42, 46, 23, and 296.

“By these actions and inactions, the Chairperson and her deputies have undermined the integrity of the Electoral Commission and breached their constitutional duties… Their continued stay in office poses a threat to the Ghanaian people in the electoral process,” the petition states.

The Office of the President is expected to review the petition and decide on the appropriate course of action.
