PRESIDENT JOHN Dramani Mahama has instructed the Ghana Police Service to launch an immediate investigation into the deaths of eight citizens during the 2020 and 2024 general elections.
In a formal letter issued on January 10, 2025, the Office of the President, through Secretary to the President Dr. Callistus Mahama, requested Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Dr. George Akuffo Dampare to prioritize justice for the victims.
The directive proposes the formation of a Dedicated Investigative Taskforce within the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) and urges collaboration with witnesses, victims’ families and electoral bodies.
The letter emphasizes using forensic evidence and reviewing the security arrangements during the elections to ensure accountability and transparency.

Key recommendations include:
1. Special Taskforce: A CID team dedicated to these cases.
2. Victim and Witness Engagement: Gathering crucial information from those affected.
3. Forensic Analysis: Employing advanced methods to analyze evidence from crime scenes.
4. Electoral Review: Working with the Electoral Commission to understand gaps in election security.
The letter assures full support from the Presidency and emphasizes public transparency, requesting periodic updates on the investigation’s progress.
With the deaths described as a scar on Ghana’s democratic process, this move has drawn attention to the need for justice and the safeguarding of human lives during elections.
The ball is now in the court of the Ghana Police Service to ensure these investigations bring closure to the victims’ families while maintaining the integrity of Ghana’s democracy.
