Accra, Ghana – In a thought-provoking commentary, Mohammed Shamsu Ashaibu, affectionately called SHAMS, a prominent social commentator, has shared a detailed guide aimed at ensuring the National Democratic Congress (NDC) excels in governance following its overwhelming electoral victory.

His reflections provide a roadmap for addressing the pitfalls that led to the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) significant loss in the recently held general elections.

SHAMS began his analysis by urging leaders to undertake a “SWOT Analysis” – a strategic tool used in business to evaluate strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats. He argued that understanding the causes of NPP’s defeat could serve as a cautionary tale for the NDC as it assumes leadership.

Key Lessons from the NPP’s Loss

SHAMS outlined several factors that contributed to the NPP’s electoral downfall:

1. Corruption: The NPP’s administration was marred by allegations of widespread corruption. He cited instances such as the reported hoarding of over $1 million in cash by a minister.

2. Arrogance of Power: He criticized former President Nana Akufo-Addo for actions such as demanding traditional chiefs to stand before greeting them, which many perceived as a display of hubris.

3. Complacency: SHAMS highlighted the administration’s perceived impunity, referencing the deaths of eight citizens during election-related violence and the collapse of banks that left thousands unemployed.

4. Stealing: The alleged misappropriation of lands, including the Achimota Forest and Cantonments Airport lands and othe state capture were seen as a betrayal of public trust.

5. Insensitivity to Public Concerns: Policies such as the sharp increase in Hajj fares from GH¢11,900 to GH¢75,000 and the imposition of numerous taxes were cited as examples of policies that alienated the electorate.

A Blueprint for NDC Leadership

In light of these issues, SHAMS advised NDC officials to avoid the pitfalls of arrogance, corruption and complacency. Instead, he called for a renewed commitment to good governance characterized by:

●Creating better employment opportunities

●Overhauling the educational system

●Ensuring justice and accountability

●Demonstrating sensitivity to public concerns

He further emphasized the importance of humility and foresight, urging NDC officials to govern with the consciousness of their eventual exit from office. “Let’s think of the day we shall leave office the very day we take office and that will guide our conduct in serving the people,” he advised.

Rallying Call

SHAMS concluded his message with a rallying call to the NDC, its leader John Dramani Mahama and the people of Ghana. “Let’s eschew arrogance of power, corruption, and embrace the imperatives of good governance. Together, we can build a prosperous Ghana,” he stated.

As the NDC prepares to govern, these words serve as both a guide and a reminder of the high expectations placed on the new administration.
