THE NATIONAL Democratic Congress (NDC) Council of Elders has called on the Electoral Commission (EC) to ensure that the December 7, 2024, elections are free, fair and peaceful. The statement was made by the Council’s Chairman, Alhaji Mahama Iddrisu, during a press briefing in Accra.

As the country gears up for the highly anticipated elections, the NDC Council of Elders took the opportunity to express their concerns regarding the integrity of the election process, especially in light of previous incidents involving the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP). They referred to election-related violence during the 2019 and 2020 elections, particularly in Ayawaso West Wuogon and Techiman where many people were brutalized while some got killed, and warned against any attempt to repeat such actions.
Alhaji Mahama Iddrisu emphasized the NDC’s commitment to peaceful elections, highlighting that former President John Mahama, the NDC’s presidential candidate, had signed a peace pact alongside other presidential hopefuls. However, he expressed doubts about the true intentions of the current government, pointing to ongoing concerns about the NPP’s possible use of vigilante groups and abuse of power to manipulate the election processes.

“The NPP government’s history, when it comes to elections is disheartening. Their recent attempts to fix roads and distribute money to voters, just before the election, show their desperation to cling to power,” said Iddrisu. “This is an insult to Ghanaians, who have suffered under their leadership for eight years.”
The NDC Council also urged the public to remain vigilant and protect their votes. They called on Ghanaians to stay alert for any irregularities or attempts to manipulate the election and to report troublemakers to the relevant authorities. The media, they said, has an important role to play in ensuring the transparency of the election.

The Council also expressed dissatisfaction with the Electoral Commission’s handling of preparations for the election. They pointed out the recent controversy surrounding the reprinting of ballot papers for Special Voting in the Western and Eastern regions, noting that such actions cast doubt on the EC’s ability to manage the election effectively and efficiently. They urged the Commission to ensure the accuracy of results, highlighting the discrepancies in the 2020 election where the figures fluctuated during the tallying process.
Despite these concerns, the NDC Council commended the party’s leadership and members for their dedication and hard work in preparing for the election. They acknowledged the enthusiasm, volunteerism and sacrifices made by NDC supporters throughout the campaign, noting that this election is critical for the future of the country.

“The passion and commitment shown by our party members have been overwhelming,” Iddrisu said. “Now, we must ensure a high voter turnout. We cannot afford to be complacent.”
The Council urged NDC members to continue their voter education efforts, particularly in educating voters on how to correctly thumbprint on the ballot papers. They emphasized that every vote counts and that it is essential to protect the vote at all costs to ensure a smooth and credible election process.

“We are approaching a historic moment in Ghana’s history,” Iddrisu concluded. “This is a call to restore our democracy; to end eight years of corruption, mismanagement, and arrogance. His Excellency John Dramani Mahama is the leader who will bring change, and we call on all Ghanaians to vote for him and the NDC on December 7.”
The NDC also reminded its polling agents across the country to remain loyal, dedicated, and vigilant in carrying out their duties, ensuring the integrity of the voting process. They emphasized the importance of their work in securing a better future for the youth and the entire nation.
With just days left before the election, the NDC is urging Ghanaians to head to the polls early on December 7 and cast their votes for President John Dramani Mahama and the party’s parliamentary candidates.

“It is time to reset Ghana, to restore dignity, integrity, and prosperity for all Ghanaians,” said Iddrisu. “Together, we will win this election, and we will build a new Ghana”, he said.
