THE SENIOR House Master of Labone Senior High School (SHS), Mr. Eric Agyemang aka Power has been brandishing a gun on his WhatsApp Display Picture (DP) against police regulations.
Section Seven of the Arms and Ammunitions Act says: “No person shall, except in accordance with the terms of a permit granted under this Decree or with the written consent of the Inspector-General of Police, publicly display any arms or ammunition (including explosives) or discharge any firearm or other weapon in any public place.
Checks by the media indicate that at least from 18th of June until the morning of 24th June, 2024, the photograph of Mr Agyemang purportedly loading a pump action gun was being displayed on his WhatsApp DP.
There is enough scholarly research material as well as Ghana’s Electronic Communications Act 2008 (Act 775) that support the view that social media is part of public space.
Hence, popular Ghanaian artiste, Samuel Adu Frimpong, known in showbiz as Medikal, who brandished a gun in public, was convicted to a fine of GH3, 600 by an Accra Circuit Court.
The court presided over by Justice Emmanuel Essandoh, a High Court judge sitting with additional responsibility as a circuit court judge, convicted Medikal on his on plea of guilt.
Persons in Ghana who go for weapon licencing are well aware that when they display their guns in public their annual license will not be renewed.
It is not yet clear whether Mr Agyemang is licensed to carry such a weapon and whether the gun displayed is his personal property or not, however a gun expert has positively identified the weapon as a pump action gun.
