The Regent of Klagon, Nii Gamu Amui Issah, is urging the government through the Lands and Natural Resources Ministry to address the aging boundary dispute between Tema and Nungua Traditional Areas over Klagon land.

His demand comes on the heels of an eight-man committee set by the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources to investigate encroachment on the acquisition land at Klagon.

Samuel Abu Jinapo, Minister of Lands And Forestry

The two traditional areas claim ownership to Klagon land, an issue which has lingered since the demise of Nii Anu Keteke, the first chief of Klagon after gaining autonomy from Adjei Kojo, and was enstooled by the Tema Paramountcy as a division under the Tema Traditional Area.

However, years after Nii Anu Keteke’s death, Klagon is being touted as a Nungua land to the surprise of the Tema Traditional Area, and contrary to the fact that Klagon and Sakumono are both villages under Tema.

Currently, one Nii Bortey Klan, a native of Nungua calls himself the chief of Klagon, an assertion the Nungua Traditional Area has denounced on a number of times for not enstooling any chief at Klagon, and has no such person among the names of sub-chiefs in the Nungua Traditional Area.

Information has it that, the said Nii Bortey Klan is not a gazetted chief of the Greater Accra Regional House of Chiefs, but allegedly has his name in the register of the National House of Chiefs.

Responding to a question regarding why it took all this while to install a Regent for Klagon, Nii Gamu Amui Issah said, the Tema Traditional Council kept quiet over the years in expectation of the government to act since the said land is an acquisition area.

Unfortunately, the government did nothing resulting in the sale of about 600 out of about 1,400 acres of land reserved as forestry land by the self-styled chief of Klagon and some individuals from Nungua.

“Aside the committee set to investigate encroachment on the land, we call on the Forestry Commission to also institute a probe into the destroy of the reserved natural resource”, he stressed.

Whilst the Klagon Regent implores the government to revert the land back to the primary owners (Tema people) if it intends not to use it again. He also asked that immediate steps be taken to resolve their boundary dispute to forestall any eventuality.

Nii Gamu Amui Issah, Regent of Klagon

“….what we seek now is for the government to take immediate look at the boundary issue between us and our brothers at Nungua, and revert our land back to us should government decides not to use it any longer”, the Regent emphasised.

Nii Amui Issah who doubles as the Ga-Dangme Muslim Chief of Ashaiman sought the occasion to wish all villages under the Tema Traditional Area a happy and prosperous Homowo celebration. All Tema villages celebrate their annual Homowo a week after the Paramountcy had climaxed the festival celebration.
