MORE than 105 people, including children, were rescued to safety after heavy rains triggered severe flooding in parts of Tse-Addo in Accra on Monday, June 29, 2026.
The torrential rainfall, which began in the early hours of Monday, left several homes and streets submerged, trapping many residents as floodwaters rose rapidly.
By mid-morning, between 10:00 a.m. and 12:00 noon, a joint emergency response team made up of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO, including LaDMA Branch), 48 Engineers of the Ghana Armed Forces and the Ghana National Fire Service launched a rescue operation to evacuate stranded residents.
Children, women and the elderly were among those rescued from flooded homes and moved to safer locations. Emergency personnel used boats and other rescue equipment to reach people who had become trapped by the rising waters.
The swift and coordinated operation helped rescue more than 105 people and is believed to have averted a major tragedy.
Although no deaths had been reported at the time of filing this report, many affected families lost household items, furniture and other personal belongings to the floodwaters. The extent of damage to homes and property is yet to be fully assessed.
Officials, especially NADMO are expected to carry out further assessments in the affected communities to determine the number of displaced persons and provide relief support to victims.
The flooding has once again highlighted the persistent challenge of floods in low-lying communities across Accra during the rainy season.
Residents have repeatedly blamed poor drainage, choked gutters and uncontrolled development along waterways for the recurring disasters whenever heavy rains fall.
Authorities have urged residents living in flood-prone communities to remain alert, avoid walking or driving through floodwaters, and cooperate with emergency responders during rescue operations.
NADMO has also appealed to the public to report emergencies promptly to enable a swift response as the rainy season continues.
