AS AYAWASO East prepares for the March 3, 2026 by-election, National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary candidate Baba Jamal Mohammed Ahmed has set out what he describes as a clear and practical development agenda for the constituency.

Addressing residents at a mini-rally in Nima-Hollandias, the former Member of Parliament for Akwatia underscored his long-standing ties to the Ayawaso East Constituency. “I grew up here. I studied here. I built my house here and staying in it. I am one of you,” he told supporters.

LAWYER BABA JAMAL, No. 1 ON THE BALLOT PAPER.

A lawyer by profession and number One on the ballot paper, Baba Jamal said effective parliamentary representation requires experience, competence and a genuine commitment to community development. He maintained that leadership must produce measurable results.

“If I do nothing to benefit the constituency as a whole, then my work as MP is useless, and I must step down immediately,” he stated.
Reflecting on his tenure in Akwatia, he disclosed that in 2012 he supported about six young people to study medicine in Cuba under a special programme.

According to him, they are now practicing doctors in various hospitals. He said the initiative demonstrates his commitment to investing in human capital and pledged to expand similar opportunities for the youth of Ayawaso East.

“If someone has failed, it does not mean I am coming to fail. I am coming to make a difference for all to see,” he added.

Lawyer Baba Jamal, affectionately called Askolondo, also addressed what he described as misleading claims by some opponents who are invoking the name of President John Dramani Mahama while contesting as independent candidates. He clarified that the President supports a candidate running on the official NDC ticket and not an independent aspirant.

He explained that under Ghana’s parliamentary system, an independent Member of Parliament cannot simply join the ruling party after winning a seat. Such a move, he noted, would require the individual to vacate the seat and trigger a by-election.

“It does not work the way they are portraying it,” he said, describing any campaign based on that premise as misleading.

The NDC candidate acknowledged that Ayawaso East has consistently supported the party but said many residents believe development has not kept pace with their loyalty. He pledged to focus on improved schools, job creation, infrastructure development, youth skills training and targeted support for women entrepreneurs.

Citing his record in Akwatia — including the construction of schools, health facilities, markets and roads — Baba Jamal said he has the experience to deliver tangible results.
He added that he continues to live in Ayawaso East with his family, stressing that true representation requires close contact with the people and a clear understanding of their daily challenges.

“This is about giving Nima the respect and development it deserves,” he said, expressing confidence that the constituency can chart a new path of growth under his leadership.
