THE MINISTRY of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, through its Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, is partnering with the United Kingdom’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (UK FCDO) to promote the development of greener and more resilient cities across Ghana.
The initiative, which falls under the Green Cities, Infrastructure, and Energy Programme, is designed to support the creation of inclusive urban environments powered by sustainable infrastructure and clean energy solutions.

In a stakeholder engagement held in Accra, the Deputy Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Hon. Rita Naa Odoley Sowah, highlighted that the collaboration aims to tackle the growing challenges of urbanisation, environmental degradation, and inadequate public infrastructure.
“The objective is to improve the quality of life in our cities by addressing issues such as waste management, affordable housing, public transport, energy efficiency, and access to essential services,” she stated.

According to her, both Ghana and the UK will work closely with local governments to design and implement practical, climate-resilient urban projects. Special attention will also be given to ensuring that marginalised and vulnerable groups are not left behind in the process.
Hon. Naa Odoley Sowah noted that the partnership reflects the two countries’ shared commitment to climate action and the achievement of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 11; Sustainable Cities and Communities, SDG 7; Affordable and Clean Energy, and SDG 13 – Climate Action.

She assured the public that further updates would be provided as the programme is rolled out in selected municipalities across the country.
