THE NATIONAL Democratic Congress (NDC) has officially announced its decision to contest the upcoming Akwatia by-election slated for September 2, 2025.

According to the party’s Deputy National Communications Officer, Comrade Godwin Ako Gunn, the NDC is fully prepared to battle for the seat and sees the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) recent withdrawal from the Tamale Central by-election as a calculated move rather than an act of respect.

In a statement, Comrade Ako Gunn described the NPP’s decision not to contest Tamale Central as a strategic ploy. “It is a move to run away from certain defeat and to gain public sympathy ahead of the Akwatia by-election,” he posited.

He drew parallels to previous political behaviour, noting that the NDC itself did not contest the Ejisu by-election following the passing of the late John Kumah. However, he cautioned the public not to be deceived by the NPP’s stance. “In the Ablekuma North rerun, they claimed they weren’t contesting, yet they were the first to hit the ground,” he pointed out.

Comrade Ako Gunn also clarified that the Akwatia seat was previously in court and the legal matter remained inconclusive until the unfortunate passing of the NPP’s Ernest Kumi, the former parliamentary candidate.

GODWIN AKO GUNN, DEPUTY NATIONAL COMMUNICATION OFFICER, NDC.

He extended sympathies to the family of the late Ernest Kumi and to the families of the eight national figures who recently lost their lives in a tragic helicopter crash.

Finally, he urged all party members and supporters to remain respectful in their public discourse during this period of national mourning.
