IN A LANDMARK moment for gender equality and local governance, Hon. Victoria Dzeklo has been overwhelmingly confirmed as the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) of the South Tongu Municipal Assembly.

Her appointment follows a nomination by the President of the Republic of Ghana, His Excellency John Dramani Mahama and marks a historic breakthrough in the district’s leadership.

During the confirmation process, Dzeklo – who also served as the Presiding Member – delivered powerful opening remarks, urging Assembly Members to vote not just with loyalty but with vision.

“If we are unable to confirm a Municipal Chief Executive, it would have a toll on the development of the Municipality,” she stated, encouraging unity and progress in alignment with the rest of the Volta Region, which has confirmed all presidential nominees.

VICTORIA DZEKLO FINALLY APPROVED AS SOITH TONGU MCE.

Resounding Confirmation: The confirmation vote saw an impressive turnout, with 48 out of 57 valid votes cast in favor of Dzeklo – an overwhelming 83% endorsement.

Total Voters: 58

No Votes: 9 (16%)

Rejected Ballots: 1 (1%)

A Vision for Progress: In her acceptance speech, Dzeklo expressed deep gratitude to President Mahama, the NDC leadership, traditional authorities, Assembly Members and her family. She pledged to lead with “determination, focus and confidence,” aiming to usher South Tongu into a new era of growth and opportunity.

Key Priorities: As MCE, Dzeklo plans to:

● Champion development initiatives that directly benefit residents

● Realign local goals with the President’s and NDC’s broader vision for progress

● Foster collaboration with Assembly Members, chiefs, and stakeholders for smooth project implementation

Volta Regional Minister Hon. James Gunu praised Dzeklo’s competence and leadership qualities, predicting she will be remembered as a transformative leader. He also announced the Presiding Member seat she vacated is now open for nomination.

A Trailblazer with Proven Experience: Victoria Dzeklo brings over a decade of public service to her new role – having served 9 years as Assembly Member for the Atravenu Electoral Area and 5 years as Presiding Member. Her appointment not only breaks gender barriers but also signals a progressive shift in South Tongu’s leadership.

About South Tongu: Situated in the Volta Region, the South Tongu Municipality is home to roughly 87,000 people. The local economy thrives on agriculture – particularly maize, cassava, vegetables and fishing. The area boasts a rich Ewe cultural heritage and is known for its traditional values and strong community ties.

Dzeklo’s confirmation is more than a personal victory – it’s a powerful symbol of change, representation and a brighter future for South Tongu.
