THE CONFEDERATION of African Football (CAF) has imposed strict sanctions on Senegal following chaotic scenes during the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) final against Morocco.
The disciplinary action, announced on Tuesday, includes heavy fines, match suspensions, and a strong warning to uphold discipline in African football.
Federation Fined Over $615,000
CAF fined the Senegalese Football Federation (FSF) more than $615,000 after finding the team guilty of misconduct involving players, officials, and supporters during the high-profile final.
Coach, Players Sanctioned
Senegal’s head coach, Pape Thiaw, has been handed a five-match suspension and a $100,000 fine for his conduct. Two players, Iliman Ndiaye and Ismaila Sarr, were also suspended for two matches each.
Senegal Accepts Decision
In a notable move, the FSF has announced it will not appeal the ruling, accepting full responsibility for the actions that led to the sanctions.
CAF Sends Strong Message

CAF said the punishments were necessary to address acts of indiscipline and protect the integrity of the game. The AFCON final was marred by tension, protests and behaviour deemed unacceptable under football regulations.
Discipline and Reputation at Stake
Football authorities emphasize that while passion and emotion are part of the sport, players and officials must avoid actions or statements that damage the reputation of others or the game itself.
Mixed Reactions
While several players were criticised for their conduct, Sadio Mané has been widely praised for showing composure and leadership during the incident.

Road to Redemption
By accepting CAF’s ruling, Senegal is seen to be taking responsibility and moving forward. Analysts say the federation must now focus on restoring its image through improved discipline and stronger public relations strategies.
CAF hopes the decision will serve as a deterrent and reinforce respect, professionalism, and fair play across African football.
