GHANA has stressed on its commitment to safeguarding cultural heritage and promoting culture-driven development at the 43rd session of the UNESCO General Conference, currently taking place in Samarkand, Uzbekistan.

Deputy Minister for Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, Hon. Yussif Jajah, represented the sector Minister, Abla Gomashie, and led Ghana’s delegation to the international event, where he delivered a statement on the country’s cultural priorities.

In his remarks, Hon. Jajah praised UNESCO for maintaining a focus on Africa, gender equality, and support for least developed countries, youth, and indigenous peoples, areas that align closely with Ghana’s national goals and the African Union’s Agenda 2063.

He expressed Ghana’s support for the protection of cultural heritage, especially during emergencies, and endorsed the universal ratification of the 1954 Hague Convention, which expands the Heritage Emergency Fund.

Referencing Ghana’s progress under the Culture 2030 Indicators and outcomes from the recent MONDIACULT 2022 conference, the Deputy Minister called for deeper integration of culture into global education and climate change strategies.

He also highlighted the importance of tourism, culture, and the creative arts as key sources of employment and innovation—especially for youth and women in Ghana.

Hon. Yussif Jajah (Ebore) concluded by welcoming efforts to protect cultural identity and promote youth-led digital heritage initiatives and storytelling.
