THE INCREASING trend of blocking public roads in Accra for private events such as weddings, funerals, and concerts is causing serious inconvenience to commuters, businesses, and city authorities.

Accra already faces daily traffic congestion, but the situation worsens when key roads are closed off for private activities. This results in long travel delays, lost working hours, and financial losses for both businesses and transport operators.

Residents say the practice disrupts daily life and puts public safety at risk, especially when ambulances or fire trucks/tenders are delayed due to blocked roads. Commercial drivers and delivery services also lose income as they spend more time stuck in traffic.

Key concerns raised include:
– Heavy traffic and inconvenience for road users
– Loss of business and productivity
– Risk to emergency/fire tenders response times
– Weak enforcement of city by-laws
– Noise pollution and environmental impact

Call for Action:
Many are calling on city authorities to tighten the rules around event permits. Organizers should be required to get proper approval and submit a traffic management plan. Local assemblies and police must work together to monitor compliance and penalize those who violate the rules.

Public education is also needed to help promote respect for shared spaces and civic responsibility.

As Accra aims to become a cleaner, safer, and more livable city, better regulation and public cooperation are essential to solving this growing problem.
