News Desk Report – National Tymes
RESIDENTS of Nungua have issued a strongly worded open letter to Hon. Adam Mutawakilu, Managing Director of the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL), demanding immediate action over prolonged water shortages that have severely impacted the community.
According to the letter, the water crisis has persisted for several months, affecting homes, schools, hospitals, and businesses.
Despite hosting the Sea Water Desalination Plant; a strategic national investment designed to supply water to coastal communities, Nungua itself remains without reliable access to water.

“This is a contradiction that borders on institutional negligence,” the letter stated, describing the situation as a violation of basic human dignity.
The residents say that explanations provided by GWCL at a recent town hall meeting; blaming the issue on technical faults at the plant, were unsatisfactory and misleading. They accused officials of withholding the truth and insulting the intelligence of the community.
Credible information, the residents claim, reveals that the plant’s shutdown is due to GWCL’s accumulated debt to the plant operators and claims that desalinated water is too expensive; issues that were not disclosed during the public engagement.
“These realities were conveniently omitted from the Town Hall engagement, leading to wrongful blame on technical failure,” the letter emphasized.
The people of Nungua are now demanding:
1. A truthful explanation of the real reasons behind the shutdown.
2. Immediate steps to restore the plant’s operations.
3. A clear and credible timeline for resolving the water crisis permanently.

They reminded GWCL that access to safe water is a basic human right and warned that continued inaction would force the community to take lawful steps to protect their welfare.
The letter, signed by Nii Ayitey Armah on behalf of the community, was also copied to the Minister for Works, Housing and Water Resources, Hon. Kenneth Gilbert Adjei.
“We await your urgent response and corrective measures,” the letter concluded.
