PRESIDENT of the Republic of Ghana and African Union Champion for Gender and Development, H.E. John Dramani Mahama, has arrived in Beijing, China, to participate in the Global Leaders’ Meeting on Women, scheduled for October 13–14, 2025.
The summit, co-hosted by the Government of China and UN Women, commemorates the 30th anniversary of the landmark Fourth World Conference on Women held in Beijing in 1995.
President Mahama is accompanied by First Lady H.E. Lordina Mahama, Minister for Foreign Affairs Hon. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa (MP), and other senior government officials. Their participation underscores Ghana’s commitment to advancing gender equality and women’s empowerment both nationally and across the African continent.
The meeting brings together heads of state, government leaders, and representatives from international organizations to reaffirm the commitments made in the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action.
This year also marks the 80th anniversary of the founding of the United Nations, adding significance to the discussions aimed at accelerating the implementation of gender equality initiatives.
While in Beijing, President Mahama is expected to hold bilateral discussions with Chinese President Xi Jinping and Premier Li Qiang. These meetings aim to strengthen Ghana-China relations, focusing on investment opportunities and collaborative efforts to promote women’s development.
Ghana has made notable strides in gender equality, including the passage of the Affirmative Action Gender Bill in 2024, which seeks to increase women’s participation in governance and decision-making to a minimum of 30% by 2030.
President John Dramani Mahama’s presence at the summit highlights Ghana’s ongoing efforts to champion women’s rights and empowerment on the global stage.
