GOVERNMENT Statistician, Dr. Alhassan Iddrisu, has called for urgent investments in agriculture infrastructure to help sustain the recent drop in food prices, which has contributed to Ghana’s overall inflation rate falling to single digits for the first time in four years.

According to new data from the Ghana Statistical Service (GSS), the country’s inflation dropped to 9.4% in September from 11.5% in August. A major reason for this was a decline in food inflation, which fell to 11% from 14.8%.
Speaking on The Point of View on Channel One TV, Dr. Iddrisu said to keep food prices stable, Ghana must boost irrigation systems to support all-year farming, especially for key staples like yam, cassava, rice, and vegetables.
He also highlighted the need for better food storage systems to prevent post-harvest losses, particularly for perishables such as tomatoes, onions, okro, and peppers.

Dr. Iddrisu added that improving transport infrastructure is equally important to ensure food is distributed efficiently across the country.
