AT THE 80th United Nations General Assembly, President John Dramani Mahama called for a more balanced global financial system that gives Africa a stronger voice in key institutions.
He criticised the current financial architecture as “rigged against Africa” and urged reforms that reflect the continent’s growing importance.

President Mahama also appealed for the lifting of the economic blockade on Cuba, describing the country as a loyal ally to Africa. “The Cuban people shed their blood on African soil in the fight against apartheid. Cuba remains a faithful friend of Africa,” he said.
Quoting Ghana’s first President, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, he added: “We seek to be friends with all and enemies to none.”
In a passionate defence of multilateralism, Mahama said the United Nations must be protected, calling it the modern world’s version of a community courtyard, a place where all nations gather to share ideas, address grievances, and find common solutions.

He warned, however, that technology and social media are replacing real connection with artificial engagement, reinforcing division instead of unity. “The illusion of connectivity hides the reality of growing isolation,” he noted.
President John Dramani Mahama urged world leaders to preserve the UN as a unique space that holds nations together as a global community.
